White BallThe 2009 LASER Awards: Social Responsibility of Science and Science Education

Seattle City Club
On June 12, Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium will co-present a City Club lunch forum to discuss the social responsibility of science and science education.

What role/responsibility do scientific organizations and scientists have to engage the public in dialogues to better understand current scientific research and it implications for society? What role/responsibility do scientific organizations and scientists have in shaping science and math education?

Panel members are the recipients of the 2009 Science Champions: Science Education Advocate Award. They include Kim M. Fowler, senior research engineer for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Edmund O. Schweitzer, III Ph.D. and president of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.; and representatives of Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, Northwest Association for Biomedical Research and the Spokane Youth Environmental Conference.

The forum takes place from 12-1:30 p.m. at the Washington Athletic Club, 1325 Sixth Avenue, Seattle. The event is presented by Washington State Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER), CityClub, and The Boeing Company.

For tickets and information, visit the City Club Web site. May 18, 2009

White BallFriends of Washington NASA Space Grant

Space Grant alumni, their families and other friends of the Washington consortium have a unique opportunity to support Space Grant's programs through the Friends of Washington NASA Space Grant Fund.

Established in 2004, Friends of Washington NASA Space Grant supports scholarships and fellowships, student research opportunities at NASA and at member institutions, and other diverse projects and events that encourage science, technology, engineering and math education for Washington residents.

While NASA provides WSGC's base funding, the agency requires its contribution to be matched by private support. Contributions to Friends of Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium help meet this goal.

There are two ways to support Friends of Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium. Alumni who receive mailings from the UW Foundation may designate all or part of their gift to go to Friends of Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium.

Donors may also pledge support directly through the link at left, labeled Support Space Grant.

We are grateful for past support from the Space Grant community. Your future support will allow us to do even more to further science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in Washington. March 25, 2009
